A New Home for the Holidays

Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc not only on humans but on animals as well.

Dewey is one of the luckier survivors, having landed with us at the APL after wandering the streets.  Our shelter manager went to great lengths to find his owner, but to no avail. So she added him to our "adoptable" list on PetFinder.org.

All the way out in Oregon, Pat found Dewey on the Petfinder website, and it was love at first sight. Pat arranged for Dewey to fly to Portland, where they spent a night together in a hotel before driving through the Cascades to Pat's home in eastern Oregon.

Dewey has already learned to fetch and to wear a harness. And though it's about 10 degrees there now, he doesn't even seem to mind the cold!

While he was with us, Dewey tested positive for heart worms, but that news didn't deter Pat, who has arranged with his vet to provide first-rate treatment.

Christmas came early for Dewey and for Pat . . . and for all of us at the APL working to help every animal's tale have a storybook ending as magical as this one.

Our Ultimate Goal? Adoptions!

In the past year, 41 dogs and 55 cats have been adopted into carefully screened, loving homes. Seeing our rescued animals living the good life is our ultimate goal, but the journey to adoption is long and rarely easy.

Rescue missions are often complicated and difficult. Once in our care, every animal needs shots, and most also need to be spayed or neutered. They must be tested so we can give our adopters an honest assessment of their health. Sadly, most of them also need some sort of medical attention for maladies ranging from broken bones to heart worms, from skin disorders to upper respiratory illnesses. Local vets generously offer us discounts on their services, but even then the bills quickly mount.

Without the generous support of our faithful donors, we could not move our rescues off the streets and into loving homes.

One of our most recent adoptions, Jones, is also one of our Black Pearls.  Jones was adopted the weekend after Thanksgiving and has loved hanging out under the Christmas tree at his new home.

An outgoing, loving kitty, Jones came to us from the Florence Humane Society about 8 months ago and had been waiting at the shelter and at our adoption cages at PetSmart for someone to give him a "fur-ever" home. Now he is lounging in the lap of luxury. Many thanks to his new family for making Jones's wish come true!

What's Your New Year's Resolution?

In a world full of suffering and a daily onslaught of bad news, what can you do to make your own community a better place?

Consider volunteering with us.

We need reliable, good-hearted people to make repairs at our shelter, to spend time with our animals, to transport animals to the vet, to take our cats to three PetSmart adoption centers, and
to take a shift checking on our cats at PetSmart. We need people to write newsletter stories and help maintain our website. We need grant writers and annual auction organizers.

As with so many organizations, the same small group of volunteers ends up doing all the work. Resolve in 2018 to devote some of your time and talent to the APL mission.

If you have a heart for animals, we have a need for your support. E-mail our shelter manager if you can help: aplpets@bellsouth.net.

Searching for the perfect gift for those hard-to-buy-for folks?

Support the APL with a
Black Pearl gift in honor or in memory of loved ones, now and throughout the year!

Details and an order form are on the home page of our website.

Deadline for Christmas delivery is Mon., Dec. 18.

The Auction Was a Big Success!

Many thank to all who helped us raise funds to support our mission in 2018:

  • Our sponsors, who helped us keep our costs to a minimum.
  • Our auction donors, who provided the services and items we used to raise funds.
  • Our volunteers, who invested many hours to ensure the success of this event.
  • Our attendees, who bought tickets and tables and bid generously to fund our mission.

We've Gone Digital!

After more than three decades of printing and mailing the bulk of our newsletters, we have finally taken the plunge to go entirely digital! We hope you love the new format, and we welcome your feedback. Using eNews will enable us to be better stewards of our donors' dollars--and it will save trees, too!

Please share this newsletter with friends, coworkers, and family members--anyone who loves animals--and encourage them to subscribe. It takes a big village to keep our shelter running and our animals healthy, well-fed, and loved and to find them caring forever homes.
